BBC – Microwave breakthrough helps boost hard drive sizes

  • Current HDD storing data on spinning disks holds ~14TB
  • Western Digital says using microwaves on 3.5″ drives could increase capacity to 40TB
  • On sale in 2019
  • Disks depending on moving parts are cheaper and last long (vs solid state)
  • Technique is called microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR)
  • An alternate approach using heat instead of microwaves is more expensive and technically tricky as well as suffer reliability issues…platters are heated to 400C
  • MAMR requires fewer mfg plant and material changes
